My name is Jake Runyan and my love of fishing began when I was fishing with my Uncle Rick, Dad, and Papa Gomer. Sure, I loved fishing ponds and creeks with Papa or friends from school, but something drew me to Lake Erie like a magnet. I only wanted to reel in the biggest fish. I have been an Ohio native for my entire life, but I have traveled a bunch for work and pleasure. A change happened in me when I met Johnnie Candle. My Dad and Johnnie’s dad, Captain Frank were friends. Johnnie was guiding and chartering in Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, and the Niagara River. I became his side kick and I soaked up as much as I could from Johnnie while he began his pro career in 1994. He moved away to be a big time pro, and I grew up and started working. My passion for fishing was still there and I searched for water when I could. The next chapter started for me once I met a guy by the name of Joe Bird at work one day. We began fishing tournaments with his son and another fella named Jeff Skipper. We did well, and the bug grew in me to want more competition. A friend, Ben Cochran bought a boat and we decided to compete in two man tournaments. We did well, but there was this Chase Cominsky that kept beating us. Word had it that Chase was looking for a new partner and I jumped at the opportunity. We clicked quickly, although he will admit he thought I was crazy! Chase and I had a tough first year fishing together and didn’t have the finishes we wanted. Year two was historic to put it modestly and year three is going very well. In 2022 I went full professional and took the very scary leap into this chest deep. One thing I have gained over the years professionally is you want quality over quantity. Therefore, I chose RECON Fishing Systems products. Not only are they a company that knows me by name but anytime I need advice, an issue, or just want to talk, this team is always there for me.
